The Novel Oral Anticoagulants for Acute Venous Thromboembolism: Is Warfarin Dead?

The direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have been compared with parenteral anticoagulants and vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) for the treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in several robust studies. DOACs have shown similar efficacy in preventing recurrent VTE and significant reductions in critical site (intracranial) bleeding, fatal bleeding, major and nonmajor bleeding. Warfarin and other VKAs are not dead as treatment modalities for VTE. A better way to describe the current situation is to use a boxing expression, “down but not out.” VKAs and parenteral anticoagulants still have a role to play in the management of VTE in several clinical settings. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is currently the method of choice for analyzing gut microbiota composition. As gut microbiota composition is a potential future target for clinical diagnostics, it is of utmost importance to enhance and optimize the NGS analysis procedures. Here, we have analyzed the impact of DNA extraction and selected 16S rDNA primers on the gut microbiota NGS results. Six to eight months after total hip arthroplasty, patients only attain 80% of the functional level of control groups. Understanding which functional tasks are most affected could help reduce this deficit by guiding rehabilitation towards them. The timed up-and-go test bundles multiple tasks together in one test and is a good indicator of a patient’s overall level of function. Purpose The aim of this prospective multicenter study was to determine 50:50% perceptibility threshold (PT) and 50:50% acceptability threshold (AT) of dental ceramic under simulated clinical settings. Materials and Methods The spectral radiance of 63 monochromatic ceramic specimens was determined using a non-contact spectroradiometer. The Fourth Expert Meeting of the Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Solid Organ Transplantation (MiSOT) Consortium took place in Barcelona on October 19 and 20, 2012. This meeting focused on the translation of preclinical data into early clinical settings. This position paper highlights the main topics explored on the safety and efficacy of mesenchymal stem cells as a therapeutic agent in solid organ transplantation and emphasizes the issues (proper timing, concomitant immunossupression, source and immunogenicity of mesenchymal stem cells, and oncogenicity) that have been addressed and will be followed up by the MiSOT Consortium in future studies.

1035 The International Registry for Niemann-Pick Disease Type C (NP-C) in Clinical Practice

Background and Aim An international disease registry was started in September 2009 to evaluate the long-term disease course of NP-C in clinical settings. Methods Descriptive data from enrolment are presented for all patients with available data who were included in the Registry as of 19 th August 2011. Results 121 patients have been enrolled. The median (range) age at enrolment was 16.9 (0.9−56.6) years, age at onset of neurological manifestations was 8.2 ( Conclusions Over two-thirds of this NP-C cohort had infantile or juvenile onset of neurological manifestations; neonatal jaundice was observed more frequently in these patients versus adolescent/adult-onset patients.
